Today is the birthday of Michelangelo Buonarotti, born here in the village of Caprese Michelangelo in 1475. So famous was he, that the village officially added his to their name in the early twentieth century. In his honour, I am publishing a reproduction of the Doni Tondo, a depiction of the Holy Family currently in the Uffizi Gallery, in Florence. In the background, you can see a view of what looks like Monte Penna a few kilometres from here, as seen from Caprese. Perhaps Michelangelo included it as a memory of where he lived when he was the same age as the baby in the painting. Anyway, Happy 540th Birthday, Michelangelo.
